WaterSense provides valuable information for cost-effective measures
The amount of and access to clean water is becoming an increasingly significant issue in the United States and throughout the globe. Decreasing indoor and outdoor water consumption is a priority of the USGBC, and is usually cost effective for project teams. WaterSense provides valuable information to single family homes from their testing requirements.
Additional Questions
- Was it difficult finding a WaterSense certified professional?
- Was the hot water delivery system calculation straightforward?
- What was the most useful test/measure in this credit?

Intent
To improve the overall water efficiency of the home by completing an approved bundle of water efficiency measures that are third-party verified by a water efficiency expert.
Requirements
HOMES
Case 1: Single Family
Complete all of the requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Wa-terSense Specification for Single-Family New Homes.
Case 2: Multi-Family
Meet all of the following:
- Hot Water Delivery System – To minimize water wasted while waiting for hot wa-ter, the hot water distribution system shall store no more than 0.5 gallons (1.9 li-ters) of water in any piping/manifold between the hot water source and any hot water fixture. For projects with central water heating systems that serve multiple units, store no more than 0.5 gallons of water in any piping/manifold between the common hot water line and any hot water fixture.
- Meet the Outdoor Water-Efficiency Criteria of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense Specification for Single-Family New Homes

The homepage for the LEED Pilot Credit Library. The LEED Pilot Credit Library is intended to facilitate the introduction of new prerequisites and credits to LEED. This process will allow USGBC to test and refine credits through LEED 2009 project evaluations before they are sent through the balloting process for introduction into LEED.
