This protocol will help you comply with the LEED-EBOM credit MRc6: Solid Waste Management—Waste Stream Audit. It can be useful in any situation where you want to establish a baseline for the types and quantities of waste leaving your  building.

Waste Audit Steps

The “waste audit” is the process of determining the specific types of materials that make up a building’s waste stream. Project teams collect the building and site waste during a designated collection period and then physically sort through the waste to measure the relative percentage of landfilled waste produced by each type of waste material. The waste auditing process allows building managers to identify opportunities for diverting waste streams away from the landfill and toward recycling or composting. The steps below outline the process for conducting a waste audit.
